Recently, I learned about cells in my science class. So today, I’m going to talk about plant cells and animal cells.
What’s the difference?
Well, plant cells are cells inside of plants such as trees, flowers, or bushes. Animal cells are cells inside of bodies of people like us, or animal bodies.
What do both cells have?
Let’s start at the top. Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus and a nucleolus. A nucleus is the brain of the cell and controls all the activities. The inside of the nucleus is the nucleolus and it contains all the chromosomes. They both also have a cell membrane. A cell membrane acts as a security guard, and it controls what goes into the cell, and also what goes out of the cell. Another thing they both have is mitochondria. The very most important role of mitochondria is to produce the energy currency of the cell. How about vacuoles? These two cells both have vacuoles, however, one is larger than the other. The plant cell vacuole is much larger. Inside plant cells, vacuoles maintain the water balance. But in animal cells, vacuoles help take away waste products. One last thing, both cells have cytoplasm, which is the jellylike structure that is mainly composed of water, salts, and proteins. Cytoplasm provides a platform upon which other organelles can work within the cell.
Inside an Animal Cell
Inside an animal cell, there are some things that plant cells don’t have. Such as a lissome. A lissome helps the cell digest things like dead organelles, acids, proteins, and some other unwanted materials. They then break up the bigger molecules into tiny molecules and then those smaller molecules can be reused to build some other bigger molecules! Another thing that a plant cell doesn’t have is a centrosome (or a pair of centrioles). The function of the centrosome is to organize the microtubules in the cell. That controls the cell shape and cell division.
Inside a Plant Cell
Inside of a plant cell, there are some things that animal cells don’t have. One of them is a cell wall. A cell wall gives the plant its shape. It also gives protection to the plant. Another item that animal cells don’t have is chloroplast. Chloroplast takes the energy from the sunlight and converts it into sugar/food for the plant.
